Class 1 Pathway Experience and Equivalency

Experienced commercial drivers — such as those holding a Class 2 or Class 3 license with at least two years of experience driving vehicles with three or more axles — can upgrade to a Class 1 licence through Alberta’s Class 1 Learning Pathway for Experienced Drivers.

Drivers take the Class 1 knowledge test before starting formal training. However, 40 hours of mandatory in-school training through a licensed driver training school must be completed before attempting the road test. This training ensures experienced drivers refresh essential skills in vehicle inspections, air brake operation, manoeuvring, defensive driving, and safe operation of tractor-trailers.

Upon successful completion of the road test, drivers receive a provincially restricted Class 1 licensee valid within Alberta. Those seeking interprovincial privileges can complete the Competence Building Program (17–25 hours) to remove the restriction and further refine advanced driving skills.

This pathway ensures experienced drivers meet Alberta’s current standards while preparing for professional, safe, and confident operation of commercial vehicles.

We designed tailored course for both novice learners and seasoned professionals.
