Air Brake

To legally operate a commercial vehicle equipped with an air brake system in Alberta — including Class 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 vehicles — drivers must complete the Air Brake Program and obtain a “Q” endorsement on their driver’s licence.

The air brake system uses compressed air to activate the vehicle’s braking components. Because most heavy commercial vehicles rely on air brakes, completing this program is a required step before progressing toward a Class 1 licence.

How the Air Brake Program Works:

  • Classroom Training – A minimum of 6.5 hours of theory instruction delivered by a licensed training school. Students receive the official Air Brake Manual:  A Guide for Students.

  • Practical Training – Includes an instructor demonstration and supervised practice of the air brake pre‑trip inspection.

  • Practical Assessment – A one‑on‑one practical test must be completed within a 15‑minute time frame; a re‑assessment is permitted once on a separate  day if needed.

  • Knowledge Test – After passing the practical assessment, students take the Alberta driver air brake knowledge test at a registry agent. The test has 30 multiple‑choice questions and requires at least 25 correct answers to pass. Upon successfully passing, the “Q” endorsement is added to the driver’s licence.

There is no practical road test required specifically for the air brake endorsement, and once earned, the Q endorsement does not need to be renewed.

This program ensures drivers have both the theoretical understanding and practical skills necessary to operate vehicles equipped with air brake systems safely and in compliance with Alberta regulations.
